Blue Devils upset No. 5 Oswego in SUNYAC semifinal
OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Matt McKeown scored the game-winner as Fredonia State upset No. 5 Oswego, 3-2, in their SUNYAC semifinal.
The Blue Devils (14-9-4) had just completed a penalty-kill -- they were 8 for 8 in that department -- when junior Steve Albert (Port Huron, Mich.) took a shot from the point which was deflected. The ricochet went to McKeown, a freshman from Niagara Falls, Ont., in the right-wing circle. His goal at 5:41 of overtime came on the only Blue Devil shot in the overtime. They were outshot 44-19 in the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Amborski (Bloomfield) made 42 saves, including six in overtime, to earn his second straight playoff win in as many games.
Oswego, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, took a 1-0 lead when Ryan Ellis scored his 16th goal of the season at 12:31 of the second period. The Blue Devils notched a 1-1 tie on an even-strength goal by senior Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, Mich.), from senior Scott Bradley (Belleville, Ont.) at 1:24 of the third period.
Later in the period, senior Joe Muli (Sioux Lookout, Ont.), who had just returned to the ice after serving a two-minute interference penalty, scored on a power-play with 6:01 remaining to give Blue Devils a 2-1 lead. Junior Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) earned assists on Muli's goal, his sixth of the season.
The Lakers (20-3-3) tied the game on a goal by Francois Gagnon with 1:47 left in regulation, only to see the Blue Devils advance to the SUNYAC championship on McKeown's goal.
The Blue Devils will play at Plattsburgh next Saturday for the title and the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. The Cardinals advanced with an 8-2 home win over two-time defending champ Geneseo in the other SUNYAC semifinal played Saturday.
