Devils eliminated after mini-game
GENESEO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State forced a decisive mini-game Saturday in their SUNYAC Tournament semifinal series at Geneseo.
But it is the Geneseo Ice Knights (17-7-2) who'll be moving on.
Geneseo's Kris Heeres took a shot from the left faceoff circle which teammate Jack Bullard then deflected for a goal 11:20 into the 20-minute mini-game.
It stood as the lone score in the mini-game and ended the season for the Blue Devils (17-9-3).
It was the second straight season the Blue Devils had their season end on Geneseo ice. The same two teams met in the semifinal round last season.
Fredonia State forced the mini-game with a dominating 5-2 win in the regulation game. They outshot the Ice Knights, 44-17, and never trailed. Joe Muli (Sioux Lookout, Ont.) had a pair of goals. Tom Briggs (Fruitport, Mich.), Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio), and Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) had one goal each.
Fredonia State senior goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) stopped 15 shots to 39 saves by Geneseo's Derek Jokic.
Jokic came up big several times in the mini-game and had an additional 14 saves.
Geneseo's win set up a rematch with the Plattsburgh Cardinals (18-10-1) in the SUNYAC Championship series. The Cardinals advanced by upsetting No. 1 seed Oswego, two games to none, in their semifinal series.
It'll mark Plattsburgh's 14th straight SUNYAC Championship series appearance.
