Devils alone in second after win at Brockport
BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia State moved into sole possession of second place in the SUNYAC with a 3-1 road win Friday over Brockport.
Staked to a 3-0 lead, senior goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) made the advantage stand up by stopping 35 of 36 Brockport shots.
All three Fredonia State goals came on special teams.
Junior forward Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, Mich.) made it 1-0 at 9:12 of the first period while the Blue Devils (12-7-3, 6-2-3 SUNYAC) were killing a penalty. The short-handed tally was unassisted. It was Kuzma's eighth goal of the season.
The Blue Devils scored two power-play goals in the second period. Junior forward Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) scored his 10th goal of the season at 4:48 while Fredonia State had a 6-on-5 advantage. Sophomore forward Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) made it 3-0 during a 5-on-4 advantage at 10:53. It was Sheehan's team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Brockport's Mike Gershon scored at 4:30 of the third period to ruin Cazares's bid for a shutout. The Golden Eagles (4-17-1, 1-10-0 SUNYAC) failed to capitalize on two power-play chances thereafter and on all nine chances they had during the game.
With the win, Fredonia State's game Saturday night at Geneseo takes on added significance. The Ice Knights, 7-0 losers at home Friday to Buffalo State, trail the Blue Devils by one point in the SUNYAC standings. Fredonia State is two points back of conference-leader Oswego.
In addition, the game Saturday will mark the 500th appearance behind the Blue Devil bench by head coach Jeff Meredith. He has coached at Fredonia State since the 1988-89 season.
Game time Saturday is 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by WCVF (88.9 FM) and webcast by Fredonia Radio Systems.
