Cortland upsets Blue Devils
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Cortland dealt Fredonia State a 4-3 SUNYAC loss Saturday at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
An unassisted goal by Frank Rizzo (St. James) at 1:25 of the third period broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Red Dragons (7-13-2, 2-7-2) their third win over the season over the Blue Devils (11-7-4, 4-5-2 SUNYAC).
The loss, coupled with Plattsburgh's 4-1 victory over Brockport, dropped the Blue Devils into fourth place in the SUNYAC standings. The top six teams make the playoffs, and seeds No. 3 and No. 4 earn home ice in the first round of the conference tournament.
Fredonia State broke on top 1-0 on a power-play goal by Adam Haberman (Novi, Mich.) at 1:45 of the first period. It was Haberman's fourth goal of the season.
Cortland scored the next three goals, two of them by Barry McLaughlin (Bellport Bay), his 20th and 21st of the season. Sandwiched between McLaughlin's pair was Ryan LaShomb's (Rush) first goal of 2006-07.
The Blue Devils rallied to tie the game, starting with an unassisted goal by senior Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.), at 16:05 of the first period, which ended in Cortland's favor, 3-2.
Freshman Matt McKeown (Niagara Falls, Ont.) scored the only goal of the second period, his ninth of the season, a power-play tally at 12:23. It forged the 3-3 tie and set the stage for Rizzo's game-winner, which was the lone goal of the third period.
The Red Dragons had a 29-26 shot advantage, resulting in 25 saves by Fredonia State's Pat Street (Annapolis, Md.). Cortland's Ben Binga (Rochester) made 23 stops. Fredonia State senior Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio) had two assists.
The Blue Devils are back in action next Friday, Feb. 9, at Geneseo before venturing to Brockport for their final regular-season road game Feb. 10.
