Devils eliminated by Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – Fredonia State's season drew to a close Saturday with a 5-1 loss to Geneseo in the SUNYAC semifinals.

The Ice Knights (16-6-4) broke open a scoreless tie with two second-period goals, then put the game on ice with two more unanswered goals in the third period.

Sophomore Kyle Bozoian (St. Charles, Mo.) scored the lone Blue Devil goal on a power play with 7:16 remaining. Junior Kraig Kuzma (Muskegon, Mich.) assisted.

Geneseo answered with a goal just over one minute later.

Junior goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) started in goal for the Blue Devils (16-6-5) and gave up all the Geneseo goals, including two to Jay Kuczmanski (Cheektowaga).

Sophomore Rob Stanley (New York City) played the final 5:54 in the Fredonia State net.

Brett Walker (Regina, Sask.) stopped 28 of 29 shots in for Geneseo.

Mathieu Cyr (New Maryland, N.B.) of the Ice Knights opened the scoring 3:58 into the second period when his wrist shot beat Cazares on his stick side.

Jon Schnepf (Medford Lakes, N.J.), a senior defenseman, made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season a few minutes later.

The Blue Devils stepped up the pressure for the remainder of the period to no avail. They came out skating hard early in the third period, then took a penalty. Kuczmanski made the Blue Devils pay with a power-play goal to make it 3-0.

Kuczmanski made it 4-0 with 10:19 left.

Bozoian's goal, his second of the series, made it 4-1. Geneseo's Nick Onody (Richmond Hill, Ont.) answered right back with a power-play goal and the Geneseo faithful began to celebrate. Their team's win and Plattsburgh's series victory over No. 1 seed Oswego in the other SUNYAC semifinal means the championship series will be played in Geneseo next weekend.
