Devils hold off RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) scored a pair of short-handed goals as Fredonia State held off Rochester Institute of Technology, 5-3, in a meeting of two NCAA-ranked teams.

Zeman's short-handed tallies -- his 11th and 12th goals of the season -- came during the a first period in which the Blue Devils (13-3-1 overall, 12-1-1 NCAA) built a 3-1 lead.

Sophomore Joe Muli (Sioux Lookout, Ont.) increased Fredonia State's lead to 4-1 when he scored at 14:00 of the second period while the teams were skating 4-on-4.

RIT scored with :16 left in the period, and again at 5:05 of the third period, to trim its deficit to 4-3. The Blue Devils iced the game when Muli scored into an empty-net goal in the waning seconds.

Junior goaltender Rick Cazares (San Jose, Calif.) made 22 saves for the Blue Devils, who outshot RIT 38-25. The Blue Devils were also 8 of 9 on the penalty kill.

Junior Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 7:27 of the first period. It was Fredonia State's only goal in six power-play chances.

Zeman, who earned an assist on Gilbride's goal, is tied with one other player for the most points (29) this season in NCAA Division III.

The Blue Devils entered the game ranked No. 7 in the USCHO.com NCAA Division III poll, one spot ahead of the Tigers (7-4-1). RIT is upgrading to NCAA Division I status starting next season.
