Devils take the Challenge; Gilbride is MVP

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fredonia State scored five power-play goals Saturday in a 6-2 victory over Buffalo State at the SUNYAC Challenge.

The Blue Devils (1-1-0) were awarded the Challenge championship following Cortland's victory over Potsdam in the second game Saturday. While all four teams at Cortland were 1-1 over the weekend, the Devils were awarded the title via the tiebreaking system. They allowed nine goals to Cortland's 10, the fourth tiebreaker used to determined the champ.

In addition, junior forward Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) was named tournament MVP and sophomore goaltender Rob Stanley (New York) made the all-tournament team. Gilbride recorded five points in the two games (2 goals, 3 assists) while Stanley stopped 27 of 29 shots against Buffalo State.

Sophomore Matt Zeman (Rocky River, Ohio) scored twice, once on the power play, and four teammates had one goal apiece against the Bengals (1-1-0).

Fredonia State scored four unanswered goals in the first period, all on the power play, to gain early command. The goalscorers were freshman Neal Sheehan (Avon Lake, Ohio), freshman Chad Berman (Grand Rapids, Mich.), junior Tom Briggs (Fruitport, Mich.), and senior Max Catelin (Grenoble, France).

Zeman made it 5-1 late in the second period with the only even-strength goal of the night by either team. He added an insurance goal with 40 seconds left in the game.

Each team was called for 19 minor penalties.

The two teams meet Oct. 28 in the All Sport Invitational at Buffalo State.
