PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Justin Joy had a natural hat trick -- three consecutive goals -- Friday to lead the Plattsburgh Cardinals to a 8-1 victory over the Fredonia State Blue Devils in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament.
With his team already leading 1-0, Joy scored at 6:35 and 15:07 of the first period and at 2:08 of the second period to give his team a 4-0 advantage.
Shane Remenda added two goals while Ben Kemp had one goal and one assist for the Cardinals (19-4-3). Craig Neilson stopped 22 of 23 shots to earn the victory in goal.
Erik Hlavaty (Hamburg, N.Y.) ruined Neilson's shutout bid with his a third-period goal from Jim Gilbride (Parma, Ohio) and Marc Fattey (Hamburg, N.Y.). It was Hlavaty's 11th goal of the season.
The Cardinals dealt Fredonia State freshman goaltender Rob Stanley (New York, N.Y.) his first collegiate loss (6-1-1). Stanley allowed seven goals and made 26 saves before he was replaced by Simon Maignan (Pully, Switzerland) with 13:25 left in the game.
The Blue Devils (13-12-3) will need to win the regulation game tonight to force a 20-minute mini-game. The Blue Devils must also win the mini-game. Otherwise, Plattsburgh (13-0-2 this season against conference opponents) will advance to the SUNYAC Championship series next weekend.
Game time Saturday is 7 p.m. at Plattsburgh’s Stafford Arena.
