Devils rally past MIT in final minute

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Fredonia State scored twice Tuesday in the final minute of their season-opening 8-7 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Sophomore attacker Kaleena Goldsworthy (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored the tying goal on a free-position shot with 58 seconds remaining.

A interception by freshman Kate Corrigan (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) preceded the tying goal.

With regulation time running out, Goldsworthy fed sophomore attacker Leslie VonPless (Liverpool/Liverpool) for the winning goal with :09 to go.

VonPless cut toward the cage from the right side, caught a pass from Goldsworthy stationed to the left of the cage, and completed the play with a hard shot for a goal -- her third as a collegian.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Wright (Rochester/Irondequoit) was chosen as the most valuable defender in the game. "She made," head coach Chris Case said, "several huge saves from point-blank range."

The Blue Devils led 1-0 and 2-1 in the early going before falling behind by as many as two goals.

Goldsworthy led the comeback with three goals overall. Four other sophomores -- Kaleigh Goldsworthy (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), Christie Zaganiaczyk (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon), Nicole VanEtten (Endicott/Union-Endicott), and Rebecca Erlichman (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) -- had one goal each.

The Blue Devils are back in action Wednesday against Hartwick at West Palm Beach.
