Rally falls short this time

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- One day after staging a last-minute rally in its season opener, the Fredonia State women's lacrosse team was faced with similar prospects Wednesday vs. Hartwick.

But rather than pulling out a win, the Blue Devils (1-1) dropped a hardfought 11-9 decision -- but not for lack of trying. One goal was waved off and another shot hit the post in the final minute and a half.

Picking up where they left off Monday, when they scored twice in the final minute to rally past Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 8-7, the Blue Devils jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first four minutes against Hartwick.

The Hawks scored four unanswered goals, managed to forge a 5-5 tie at halftime, and led for much of the second half. Fredonia State finally caught up, 9-9, with about five minutes left on the fourth goal of the game by sophomore attacker Kaleena Goldsworthy (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker).

Hartwick scored the next two goals, then survived as the Blue Devils mounted a comeback bid.

Contributing to the Blue Devil offense were sophomore attacker Christie Zaganiaczyk (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) and sophomore midfielder Nicole VanEtten (Endicott/Union-Endicott) with two goals and one assist each. Sophomore attacker Jessica DeBolt (Livonia/Livonia) also had a goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Wright (Rochester/Irondequoit) was credited with nine saves.

The Blue Devils' next game is at home April 6 vs. Oberlin.
