Devils deal Bengals first loss of year

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State improved to 4-2 and dealt Buffalo State its first loss of season Tuesday afternoon.

Tied 8-8 with just under 15 minutes remaining, the Blue Devils (1-0 SUNYAC) closed out the game with a 6-2 scoring run for a 14-10 SUNYAC road victory. The Bengals (0-1 SUNYAC) had entered the game with a 7-0 record.

Junior attacker Christie Zaganiaczyk (Lancaster/Lancaster) broke the tie with 13:59 remaining and put her team on top, 10-8, at 13:01, with her fourth of five goals in the game.

Junior midfielder Rebecca Erlichman (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) had the third goal of the 6-2 run and sophomore midfielder Jennifer Haas (Rush/Rush-Henrietta) added a pair during the rally. Haas finished with three goals on the day while Erlichman had one other goal and a team-high three assists. Freshman midfielder Katie Monaghan (Fairport/Fairport) added one goal and two assists.

Fredonia State junior goalkeeper Sarah Wright (Rochester/Irondequoit) made 13 saves over 60 minutes, 12 in the first half, as the Blue Devil defense tightened up after intermission. Up 6-1 at one point, the Blue Devils led 6-3 at the half and fell behind 7-6 early in the second half before staging the winning rally.

The Blue Devils are back in action Thursday at Oberlin College before playing their first home game of the season Saturday vs. Cortland. The SUNYAC game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on the new turf field behind Steele Hall.
