Devils record program's first shutout, equal team win mark

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State recorded the first shutout in the 13-year history of women's lacrosse and tied a school record for wins with a 19-0 blanking of Tri-State at University Stadium.

Freshman attacker Laura Culhane (Rochester/Gates-Chili) had four goals and two assists to lead the Blue Devils (8-4), whose 19-goal win fell one goal short of the team record for widest margin of victory.

Sophomore defender Emily Reichert (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) and senior attacker Christie Zaganiaczyk (Lancaster) had three goals each. Reichert also added an assist to match sophomore midfielder Katie Monaghan (Fairport) with four points. Monaghan had two goals and two assists. Sophomore attacker Valerie Snider (Spencerport) also had two goals.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Wright (Rochester/Irondequoit) added to her school record by recording her 28th career victory. She was called on to make just three saves, including two from point-blank range, for the school's first shutout. The closest the Thunder (0-7), a first-year team, came to scoring was late in the game when Kayla Grieser fired a shot off the crossbar. Thunder goalkeeper Genice Addis made 16 saves.

Before Friday, the closest the Blue Devils came to registering a shutout was an 19-1 victory over Medaille in 2004. Their largest margin of victory was a 22-2 decision over Alfred during the 2005 season.

With eight wins, the Blue Devils matched the 2006 and 2007 teams for wins in a season. They have four regular-season games remaining, including a Saturday afternoon visit to Morrisville State. The Mustangs are coached by former Blue Devil player and assistant coach Erynn Anderson.
