Devils defeat Brockport for first time

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder Nicole VanEtten (Endicott/Union-Endicott) scored with 1:11 left as Fredonia State completed a stunning comeback over Brockport, 12-11.

VanEtten's tally -- her second game-winner of the week -- completed a 7-0 run by the Blue Devils (4-6, 1-4 SUNYAC) over the final 21:28.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Wright (Rochester/Irondequoit) made the lead stand by stopping Brockport's Angela Inzinna (Scotia) from point-blank range in the waning seconds.

Wright finished with 10 saves, several in the final minutes as her team rallied from deficits of 7-2 in the first half and 11-5 early in the second half.

It was the first win ever by Fredonia State over Brockport in women's lacrosse. The Golden Eagles (8-4, 2-3 SUNYAC) had won the previous 10 meetings.

In addition, the win enabled Fredonia State to keep its post-season hopes alive. With two conference games remaining, both at home (Tuesday vs. Oswego, next Saturday vs. Potsdam), the Blue Devils will need to overtake three teams in the standings to earn one of four SUNYAC Tournament berths.

Sophomore attacker Christie Zaganiaczyk (Lancaster/Lancaster) led the Blue Devils with four goals, including a game-tying tally with 8:55 remaining. VanEtten, twin sophomore attackers Kayleigh and Kaleena Goldsworthy (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), and sophomore midfielder Rebecca Erlichman (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) had two goals each.

Inzinna led Brockport with four goals while sophomore Keli Martin (Liverpool) and freshman Kim Morris (Clay) had two goals each. Starting junior goalkeeper Ashley Taylor (Middle Island) was credited with nine saves and 10 goals allowed. Senior Jessica Dudek (Orchard Park) made four saves and allowed the tying and winning goals in the final 10:25.
