Devils hang on to defeat Potsdam

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State held off a furious comeback effort in the final minute to down Potsdam, 81-78, in men's SUNYAC basketball at Steele Hall.

Up by 10 points, 74-64, with :52 seconds remaining, the Blue Devils (4-7, 2-2 SUNYAC) survived after a three-point shot by Potsdam's Damon Brown (Brooklyn) glanced off the rim on the final possession of the game.

Brad Cooper (Monticello) led Fredonia State with 15 points, including four throws in the final minute. Rich Buckmon (Syracuse/Heninger) added 14 points, Kyle Gordon (Canandaigua) had 12 and a team-high six rebounds, and Julius Bryant (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) added 10 off the bench.

Gordon also led the Blue Devils with five assists, three steals, and three blocked shots. Adam Smith (Fredonia) was 4 of 4 from the line down the stretch.

Down by as many as seven points in the first half and 36-33 at halftime, the Blue Devils captured their first lead of the second half, 44-42, on a trey by Cooper. They led the rest of the way, three times by 10 points.

Potsdam's Brown made two treys, a layup, and two free throws in the final minute for 10 of his game-high 23 points. Devin Taft (Hoosick Falls) also made a trey down the stretch and finished with 13 points. Brandon Siskavich (Peru) had 15 points and Alvin Dike (Bronx) also had 13 points for the Bears (5-6, 1-3 SUNYAC).

The Blue Devils are scheduled to play 7 p.m. Tuesday against Alfred at Dods Hall.
