Slow start dooms Devils vs. Houghton

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Despite a frantic comeback attempt, Fredonia State was unable to recover from a slow start and fell to Houghton, 83-76, in men's non-conference basketball at Steele Hall.

Houghton's Luke Mortenson (Greenville) scored 25 of his 35 points in the first half to lead the Highlanders (5-5) to a 44-25 lead at the break.

The Blue Devils (1-8) outscored their opponents 51-39 in the second half but could get no closer than five points in the late going.

Kevin Reichlmayr (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) led Fredonia State with 23 points while Taha Alassari (Brooklyn/Sweet Home) added 14 and Brad Cooper (Forestburgh/Monticello) 12.

But it was the shooting of Mortensen that separated the two teams. He was 13 of 19 from the field, including 6 of 8 on three-pointers. He came into the game averaging 11.9 points per game.

The game was marred with 47 personal fouls resulting in 55 free throws. The Blue Devils as a team were 23 of 34 from the line.

Fredonia State returns to action Monday vs. Hilbert College at 7 p.m. in Steele Hall.
