Devils rally to overtake Bengals

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State rallied from as many as 19 points down to top Buffalo State, 78-75, in overtime.

The Blue Devils (5-14, 2-9 SUNYAC) took their first lead of the game, 69-67, on a layup by senior forward Kevin Reichlmayr (Rochester/Aquinas) at the start of overtime. The game was tied twice thereafter before freshman center James Kane (West Seneca/Bishop Timon) put his team ahead for good, 73-71, on a driving layup with 1:28 remaining.

A pair of free throws each by Kevin Saunders (Batavia/Batavia) and Taha Alassari (Brooklyn/Sweet Home) down the stretch in overtime were important for the Blue Devils, who trailed 13 points with 4:34 remaining in regulation. Alassari made two free throws with :15 left to complete a 13-0 run and send the game into overtime.

Kane finished with 22 points, Reichlmayr had 22 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Alassari added 12 points and five assists.

Dion Mozelle (Rego Park/Xaverian) had 13 points to lead Bengals (9-10, 4-7 SUNYAC), who failed in their sixth attempt to reach the 1,000-win mark since the program gained status at Buffalo State in 1926.

Fredonia State is back in SUNYAC action at home Friday vs. Brockport.
