Rally falls short

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia State used a 30-8 scoring run with 3:16 left to pull within two points, but could not finish off host Nazareth in the Championship Game of the Holiday Inn Airport Tournament. The Golden Flyers claimed a 66-61 victory.

The Devils (1-1) had rallied from 16 points down to edge Keystone College, 56-54, in the opening game of the tip-off tournament on Friday to advance to the Championship Game.

Nazareth appeared to be in control in building a 24-point lead, 45-21, on a basket by all-tournament team selection Tyler Smith (Fairport) early with 15:53 to play in the second half.

The Blue Devils, however, embarked their scoring run to close within two points, 53-51, on a basket by all-tournament team selection Kevin Reichlmayr (Aquinas/Rochester, NY) with 3:16 left.

Nazareth answered with a pair of free throws and a field goal by Corey McAdam (Fairport), a three-pointer by Canori and two free throws by Tyler Smith to stretch the lead back to nine, 62-53, with 1:00 to play. Fredonia came back again to within three, 64-61, when Reichelmayr converted a three-point play with :16 left. Canori, however, preserved the win with a pair of free throws with :11 left.

Nazareth's Canori's 26 points included four three-pointers. He also had 25 points in Friday's 91-69 victory over Morrisville State. Smith finished with 14 points, a game-high 10 rebounds and three blocks. McAdam added 11 points, four assists and six steals.

Nazareth made 17 of 33 shots from the field (51.5 percent) in the first half as the Golden Flyers built a seemingly safe 39-21 advantage after 20 minutes. The Golden Flyers made only nine second-half field goals in 28 attempts (32 percent) to help the Blue Devils make a game of it.

Reichlmayr led the Devils with 21 points, while Adam Smith (Fredonia/Fredonia) chipped in 15. Both were named to the all-tournament team. Brad Cooper had 11 off the bench for the Devils.

Other all-tournament team selection s were Dodrick Spencer of Morrisville State and Sherrick Belt of Keystone. Keystone defeated Morrisville, 66-63, in the consolation game.
