Second-half surge carries Oswego over Devils

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego's Dave Ponza led a trio of Lakers in double figures during a 68-56 SUNYAC win over Fredonia State.

Ponza had 20 points on 10 of 15 field-goal shooting, while Nick Perioli added 14 points and Matt Burridge had 14 for the Lakers (11-1, 3-1).

For the Blue Devils (6-6, 2-2), sophomore Taha Alassari (Amherst/Sweet Home) had a team-high 13 points and junior Tim Anderson (Jamestown/Jamestown) had 12. Junior Mike Kelly (Corning/Corning East) had 10 points off the bench.

The Blue Devils led only once, 13-12, on a basket by freshman Kyle Gordon (Canandaigua/Canandaigua). They trailed 34-26 at halftime and had a 13-point deficit during the second half before making a mild run.

A three-point basket by Alassari cut the Oswego lead to five points, 58-53, with four minutes remaining. The Lakers closed out the game with a 10-3 run, with a three-point basket by junior Chris Donahue (Olean/Olean) accounting for the only Fredonia State points down the stretch.

Fredonia State meets Cortland at 4 p.m. Saturday.
