Treys fly in loss to Plattsburgh

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia State's three-point shooting was good, but not good enough, to hang an upset loss on Plattsburgh.

The Blue Devils (7-11, 3-7) were 10 of 23 from beyond the arc -- 8 of 16 in the second half -- yet were unable to dig out of an early hole and fell at home, 76-69, in a SUNYAC game.

Junior Mike Kelly (Corning/Corning East) had 13 points in 13 minutes, while sophomore Taha Alassari (Amherst/Sweet Home) and junior Devin Watkins (Franklinville/Franklinville) had 11 points each for the Blue Devils.

Plattsburgh (13-5, 8-2) had four players in double figures, led by senior Jimmy Corless (Washingtonville) with 18 points and junior Jelani Simmons (Westbury) with 17.

The Blue Devils were stalled at the start and fell behind 11-0 in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the first half. That led to a 23-7 Fredonia State run and resulted in the Blue Devils grabbing a 23-18 lead on a three-pointer by Watkins at 9:20 of the first half.

Plattsburgh regained momentum before the half and led 37-30 at the break. The Cardinals led by as many as 14 points early in the second half, then withstood a flurry of Fredonia State three-pointers -- seven over a span of seven minutes by four different players -- which cut the Blue Devil deficit to four points. That was as close as they could get in the final 9:48.

Next game for Fredonia State is Tuesday at Buffalo State.
