Kelly sparks Devils over Pitt-Bradford

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Reserve guard Mike Kelly (Corning/Corning East) provided a second-half spark as Fredonia State downed Pitt-Bradford, 80-75, at Steele Hall.

Kelly made a three-pointer to tie the game with 3:10 left, then hit another three to put the Blue Devils (4-4) ahead for good, 74-71, with 2:46 remaining.

For good measure, Kelly assisted on the next basket, a two-pointer by sophomore Taha Alassari (Amherst/Sweet Home), to push the Devil advantage to five points.

Pitt-Bradford had a chance to take the lead in the final minute. Down 76-75 with the ball, the Panthers (3-3) turned the ball over without getting a shot. Junior Chris Kensy (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) and Alassari made two free throws each to put the game out of reach.

Alassari led the offense with 19 points despite sitting a long stretch in the second half after picking up his fourth foul. Shortly thereafter, Kelly entered the game and picked up the scoring slack. He scored 11 points -- all in the second half -- in 17 minutes of duty, his most extensive action of the season.

Junior Nate Sanzo (Westfield/Westfield) added 17 points and junior Randall Thomas (Bronx/Ryan Academy, Va.) added 10.

In addition, junior Devin Watkins (Franklinville/Franklinville) was 4 of 4 from the field, including a trey. Junior Tim Anderson (Jamestown/Jamestown) led the Devils with 11 rebounds.

Dan Thomas (Perth, Australia) had 18 points to lead the Panthers.

The game marked the fifth team Blue Devil head coach Kevin Moore has coached against his brother, Andy, head coach of the Panthers, with Kevin gaining a 3-2 advantage.

The Blue Devils close out the first semester Saturday at Penn State Behrend. Game time is 8 p.m.
