Devils drop season-opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Fredonia State was overmatched Friday in its season-opener at the Chuck Resler Invitational.

The Blue Devils (0-1) quickly fell behind by double figures and never recovered in an 84-56 loss to University of Rochester, the tournament host.

Junior Nate Sanzo (Westfield/Westfield) was the only Blue Devil to score in double figures. He had 11 points on 5 of 8 from the field.

The Blue Devils shot 32.8 percent as a team (20 of 61) and were only 2 of 18 from three-point range.

In addition, they were outrebounded 46-29.

The host Yellowjackets, ranked No. 5 in the preseason NCAA D-3 Hoops poll, were led by Seth Hauben. He had 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Brendan McAllister had 18 points and Jon Onyiriuka added 13.

Fredonia State led only briefly by scores of 2-0 and 4-0 on baskets by junior Gary Mosley (Hudson/North Springs) and Sanzo. The Yellowjackets gained command for good with a 15-3 run and led by as many as 31 points in the late going.

The Blue Devils will face Denison in the Resler consolation game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
