Donahue saves the best for last

GREENVILLE, Pa. – Junior Chris Donahue (Olean/Olean) made a three-point basket with one second left Saturday as Fredonia State topped Thiel, 75-72.

Donahue's basket --- his only field goal of the game --- trumped a trey by Thiel's Joe Herrman with :05 left which forged a 72-72 tie, the fifth deadlock of the game.

Meanwhile, freshman Kyle Gordon (Canandaigua/Canandaigua) was perfect from the field in his first collegiate starting assignment. Gordon finished with 19 points and was 9 of 9 from the field. He also grabbed eight rebounds while playing in pace of junior Nate Sanzo (Westfield/Westfield), who sat out with an injury.

Sophomore Taha Alassari (Amherst/Sweet Home) led the Blue Devils (5-5) with 21 points, six assists, and five steals.

In addition, junior Mike Kelly (Corning/Corning East) contributed 15 points in 16 minutes of reserve duty while junior Tim Anderson (Jamestown/Jamestown), playing on a sore ankle, collected 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

The see-saw game saw the Blue Devils lead by as many as seven points in the first half, only to fall behind by 12 points (55-43) at 11:17 of the second half.

With 2:59 remaining, Gordon made a lay-in to give the Blue Devils a 68-66 lead. They held the advantage until Herrman connected for his trey for the Tomcats (4-9).

The Blue Devils are back on the road Tuesday at Medaille.
