Mahaffey has goal, assist in 2-0 win

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) had a goal and an assist as Fredonia (10-4-1, 7-0-0 SUNYAC) defeated host Buffalo State (7-7-0, 4-3-0 SUNYAC), 2-0, in a SUNYAC game at Coyer Field.

Mahaffey opened the scoring in the 35th minute when, after bumping a Buffalo State defender at the top of the box, broke free and scored. He assisted on the Blue Devils' second goal just over six minutes later with a crossing pass to Ryan O'Donnell (Orchard Park/Orchard Park).

Scott Bergen (Schenectady/Mohonasen) and Mike Tarkett (Pine City/Horseheads) combined for the shutout. Bergen made five saves before leaving with a finger injury in the 79th minute. Tarkett was not called upon in the closing minutes. Shawn McDonell (West Seneca/West Seneca East) had six saves for the Bengals.

The Blue Devils will close out their SUNYAC regular season with road games Friday at Geneseo, and Saturday at Brockport. The winner Friday will put likely clinch the regular season title and earn the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs.
