The Blue Devils (12-3-2, 6-2-1 SUNYAC) did all their scoring in the second half. A Buffalo State player's inadvertent kick into his own net resulted in an own-goal and a 1-0 Fredonia State lead at 48:58. Sophomore defender Matt Smith (Lockport/Lockport) and freshman forward Nick Deck (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) added insurance tallies. Senior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made one save, a spectacular one-handed punch to preserve his team's 1-0 lead. He was relieved over the final nine minutes by senior Yoshikazu Arai (Yokohana, Japan). Their combined shutout was the 13th of the season by the Blue Devils. Buffalo State goalkeeper Shawn McDonnell (West Seneca/West Seneca East) was credited with six saves. The Bengals (6-6-4, 2-4-3 SUNYAC) were outshot, 15-12. Senior defender Bryon Thoin (Buffalo/St. Joseph's) and junior midfielder Nathan Goss (North Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) earned assists for the Blue Devils. Thoin's penalty kick taken from near midfield resulted in Smith scoring on a header at 75:36. A long run and cross by Goss set up Deck's goal at 87:23. It was the final regular-season home game for the six Fredonia State seniors: Borchard, Arai, Thoin, midfielder Vincenzo Alfieri (Rochester/McQuaid), defender Brandon Derkacz (Hamburg/Hamburg), and midfielder Michael Battisti (Brockport/Brockport). The Blue Devils close out the regular season with two road games, Saturday at RIT and Oct. 29 at Hobart, before playing host for SUNYAC Tournament game Nov. 1 vs. No. 6 seed Oswego.
