Devils claim top seed by defeating Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia State used a pair of goals by freshman Peter Dagel (Rochester/Gates Chili) in the span of just under two minutes in the first half to edge Brockport on Saturday. The win gave the Blue Devils the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament.

Dagel scored his first goal at 20:32 on an assist from sophomore Ryan O'Donnell (Orchard Park) to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.

At the 22:20 mark, Dagel followed with an unassisted goal from 25 yards out. The scores were his fifth and sixth of the season, and third in two games.

Brockport's lone goal came in the 35th minute by Brad Lefort, his 12th goal of the season.

Fredonia State senior goalkeeper Scott Bergen (Schenectady/Mohonasen) allowed one goal against four saves in goal for his 11th win of the season.

Brockport (9-4-1, 7-3-1 SUNYAC) outshot the Blue Devils, 12-8, and held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles will be the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Oneonta finished conference play 11-0-0, but is ineligible for the SUNYAC Tournament as they continue to transition into Division III from NCAA Division I.

Head coach P.J. Gondek was pleased with his team's play following the win, "I'm so proud of our team," he said, "for nailing down the No. 1 seed." The Blue Devils improved to 11-5-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the SUNYAC.

Both Fredonia State and Brockport will receive first-round byes when the tournament opens Oct. 30. They will compete in the final four at Hall of Fame Field in Oneonta on Nov. 2-3.

The Devils have one regular season game left at Hobart next Saturday.
