Devils tame Tigers, 1-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia State defeated RIT 1-0 at Rochester Saturday afternoon. The Devils, ranked 4th in the NSCAA Division III East Region, recorded their 14th shutout of the season and improved to 13-3-2. RIT drops to 7-6-2.

Fredonia State took an early 1-0 lead on a scramble in front of the RIT net. The Blue Devils applied pressure off a set piece. Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview, N.Y.) got a head onto the cross and centered in front of RIT’s goal. Tiger goalkeeper Chris Rouland (Center Valley, Pa.) tried to pounce on the loose ball, but Jason Januskiewiczy (Warwick, R.I.) shot a one-timer past Rouland for a 1-0 lead.

RIT had a good opportunity with about 20 minutes remaining in the second half. The Tigers worked the ball around the perimeter of Fredonia’s penalty area. The ball found its way onto Jorge Ciurlizza’s (McLean, Va.) foot, however his shot was off the mark as it sailed over the top of the cross bar.

Rouland made four saves for RIT, while Matt Borchard (Williamsville, N.Y.) made four stops for Fredonia State.

The Blue Devils close out the regular season on Oct. 29 at Hobart, before playing host to Oswego in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Nov. 1.
