Smith, Borchard send Devils over Hobart

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Matt Smith scored his third goal of the season and Matt Borchard tallied his 14th solo shutout to lead Fredonia State past Hobart, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.

Smith (Lockport/Lockport), a sophomore midfielder, scored into the top left corner at 56:50 of the non-conference match. It was one of 10 shots taken by the Blue Devils (14-3-2).

The Statesmen (7-8-3) took eight shots, all of which Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) stopped. In the process, he moved into the NCAA Division III record book for most solo shutouts in a season. He is tied for 18th on the all-time list.

The game was a final tuneup for the Blue Devils prior to their SUNYAC Tournament First Round match vs. Oswego at 1 p.m. Tuesday on Steele Hall Field.
