The win second up a second-round meeting 1 p.m. Sunday vs. host John Carroll at Don Shula Stadium. The Blue Streaks (13-6-1) advanced with a 3-1 win Saturday over Washington & Jefferson. Sophomore defender Matt Smith (Lockport/Lockport) took a shot that deflected off a Carnegie Mellon player to Derkacz, who was stationed about two feet in front of the net. He completed the scoring play at 107:22 -- less than three minutes before the game would have gone to a shootout. It was his first game-winning goal in 73 games as a Blue Devil. Also scoring goals for the Blue Devils (16-3-3) were senior midfielder Michael Battisti (Brockport/Brockport), freshman forward Jason Januskiewiczy (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim), and freshman midfielder Jeff Moretti (Rochester/Pittsford Mendon). Smith, Januskiewiczy, junior midfielder Nathan Goss (North Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield), and senior midfielder Vincenzo Alfieri (Rochester/McQuaid) were credited with assists. Fredonia State senior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made three saves while allowing the three goals, only the second time this season he allowed that many goals in one game. The Blue Devils held a 20-17 edge in shots. The teams were tied in corner kicks, 6-6. The game pitted two teams with nationally ranked defenses and goalkeepers, but it didn't live up to form as the Spartans (13-3-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jonathan Browne at 25:01. The Blue Devils scored the next three goals. Battisti tied the game with his first goal of the season, assisted by Goss, just before halftime (43:39). Januskiewiczy tallied an unassisted goal, his third of the year, at 50:50, before Moretti scored his first collegiate goal at 64:42. Januskiewiczy and Alfieri earned assists on Moretti's goal, which began as a corner kick. The Spartans roared back with goals by Browne, at 77:44, and by William Schlough inside the final two minutes (88:06). It was the second time this season the Blue Devils led a late lead slip away. The previous time resulted in a 2-1 loss to Plattsburgh. NOTES: Fredonia State's last NCAA Tournament win came during the 1995 season, 2-0, over St. Lawrence ... Fredonia State and John Carroll met Sept. 24 at Fredonia with the Blue Devils earning a 1-0 win on a goal by freshman midfielder Scott Gentner (Buffalo/St. Joe's). The Blue Devils lead the all-time series, 4-1-0 ... John Carroll did all its scoring in the first half in its first-round win Saturday over Washington & Jefferson (15-6-0).
