Fredonia State shoots down Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. -- Lee Wilson (Fairport/Fairport) nailed the game-winning shootout goal for Fredonia State after the Devils played Calvin College to a double-overtime scoreless tie. Fredonia State used a 3-2 advantage in the shootout to claim their spot in the NCAA Sectional final game to be played on Saturday afternoon.

After goals by Vincenzo Alfieri (Rochester/McQuaid) and Bryon Thoin (Buffalo/St. Joes) put the Devils up 2-1 in the shootout, Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) had a chance to win it. His shot bounced off the post. After another Calvin miss, Alex Parker's (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) shot at ending the game also hit the post.

Blue Devil goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) saved the next shot and cleared the way for Wilson to nail the game-ending goal.

For the game, Borchard recorded four saves. The Devils only managed one shot on goal all day, coming off the foot of Mahaffey.

Calvin goalie Joe Westra was credited with one save.

It was the fourth overtime game in the last five contests for the battle-tested Devils. In addition, all four of their ties this season have been scoreless. The game is recorded as a tie, with the winner of the shootout advancing.

Both teams had to battle the elements, as six inches of snow fell the previous day. The field was cleared, but the game was played in temperatures hovering around 30 degrees the entire afternoon.

The Devils (17-3-4) have earned the right to play Gustavus Adolphus (15-2-4) Saturday at 1:00 for the right to advance to the Final Four. The Gusties defeated Loras 3-0 earlier in the day. Calvin finishes the season at (17-4-2).

Tomorrow's game will again be live on the web, broadcast through the Gustavus Adolphus website at http://www.gustavus.edu/oncampus/athletics/audio.cfm .
