Devils ride comes to end

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. -- Fredonia State's season ended with a 2-0 loss at the hands of Gustavus Adolphus College Saturday afternoon.

The teams played to a scoreless first half before Gustavus broke into the scoring column a minute and a half into the second frame. Bobby Kroog took a lead pass from Caleb Bousu and fired a shot from 20 yards out that tucked just inside the far post. The goal was the 14th of the year for Kroog and his second goal of the sectional tournament.

Gustavus added to the lead in the 73rd minute. The play began with Kroog flicking a pass just outside the box to Jeffrey Johnson. Johnson followed by lofting a well-placed shot over Fredonia State goalkeeper Matt Borchard's (Williamsville/Williamsville South) head and just underneath the crossbar.

The Devils managed just three shots on goal. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 33rd minute. Jordan Berg (Jamestown/Jamestown) played a ball to Alex Parker (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon). Parker had an open shot at the net, but his shot could not elude Gustavus goalkeeper Tyler Garry.

Both teams finished with eight shots. Garry was credited with three saves for Gustavus.

Borchard had one save and allowed both scores. It was only the fifth time in 25 games that the Blue Devil defense allowed two goals or more.

The Devils (17-4-4) end one of the most successful seasons in a storied history. The 17 wins are the most since 1998. It was their eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and first time since 1997.

Gustavus Adolphus (16-2-4) advances to the Final Four in Greensboro, North Carolina next weekend. They will face the winner of a sectional hosted by Whitworth College (Wash.) which will be decided on Sunday. Last season, the Gusties were denied the trip after a 1-0 loss to U.C. Santa Cruz in the sectional finals.
