Devils claim SUNYAC title on PKs

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State won its first outright SUNYAC championship in 10 seasons with a 4-2 advantage in a penalty-kick shootout vs. Plattsburgh.

The teams played a scoreless tie for 110 minutes before the match -- and automatic NCAA Tournament berth -- was decided in the shootout. The teams were again tied 2-2 after two rounds of PKs, then the Blue Devils (12-6-2) broke free in the third round for a 3-2 advantage, en route the final 4-2 edge.

It was the first time Fredonia State has won the SUNYAC title since 1998, when they earned a share of the title with Plattsburgh. The Blue Devils' last outright championship was in 1997. They have won or had a share of the title eight times, including this season.

The Blue Devils' opponent in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and the site of the game, will be announced Monday. It'll mark a return to the tournament in which they advanced to the Elite Eight in 2005.
