Shootout ends title hopes

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- After four periods and 110 minutes of play, both Fredonia State and Brockport failed to score a goal in the semi-finals of the SUNYAC Tournament. As conference rules stipulate, the teams then went to a shootout to decide which team advances. Brockport won the shootout, 4-2, and earned the right to advance to the SUNYAC title game.

Although the game will be recorded as a tie in the record books, it will come as no consolation to the Blue Devils. Their season is likely over. They do stand an outside chance of getting an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In a game that featured a strong defensive showing on both sides and a great deal of mid-field play, Fredonia State's Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) was credited with three saves, while Chris Bedford of Brockport stopped two shots.

Fredonia State did hold a 9-4 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. In addition, Brockport was whistled 25 times to the Devil's 16 penalties.

For the Devils (15-3-3), all three of their ties this season were 0-0 finals. It was the 17th shutout for the Blue Devils. Borchard is credited with 14 solo shutouts has combined on the other three.

Fredonia State won the regular season matchup 2-0. However, it was the second straight year that Brockport ended the Devil's title hopes. The Golden Eagles won a 3-2 decision last year in the quarterfinals.

In the other semi-final game, Plattsburgh defeated Geneseo 2-0. Plattsburgh (18-1-0) will play Brockport (14-2-1) Saturday at 1:30 for the conference Championship. Last season, the Cardinals fell to Geneseo 1-0 in the title game.
