Two Devils chosen to All-Region team

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Two Fredonia State players have been chosen to the NCAA Division III All-Northeast Region All-Star team.

Senior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) was a All-Region First Team selection.

Junior forward Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) was a Third Team pick.

Borchard was among the nation's top goalkeepers in 2005. He ranked ninth nationally in goals-against average (0.501) and 10th in save percentage (0.882) while posting 16 solo shutouts, tied for third most in NCAA Division III history. During one stretch, he played 987:21 scoreless minutes -- also the third best streak in D-3 history.

"Matt has proven to be one this region's best goalkeepers and his national statistics back it up," Fredonia State head coach P.J. Gondek said of Borchard. "Matt was integral to our run to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament and our program's success throughout the last four years."

Mahaffey led the Blue Devils in scoring during 2005 with eight goals and 18 points. Four of his goals were game-winners.

"Mahaffey's size for a forward makes him difficult to defend," Gondek said. "He is on the rise in our conference and should be even more of a force next season."
