First-half goal trips Devils

WHEATON, Ill. -- A penalty kick by Wheaton's Steve Rigby lifted the host Thunder over Fredonia State, 1-0, in the first round of the Bob Baptista Invitational.

Rigby scored at 26:25 and Thunder goalkeeper Ryan Souders made the lone goal stand by making one save.

The Blue Devils (0-1) managed just eight shots, three by senior Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier), who had the lone shot on net that required Souders to make a stop.

Junior Steve Bergen (Schenectady/Mohonasen) made his first start in net for the Blue Devils and was credited with three saves.

The Blue Devils, ranked No. 15 in one national poll and No. 21 in another, return to action 2 p.m. Saturday vs. Wilmington, Ohio.

Wheaton, ranked No. 22 in one poll, meets Washington University (Mo.) in the championship game.
