Senior forward Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) scored in the 11th minute and freshman forward Steve Tamtakiridis (Toronto, Ont./East York Collegiate) added insurance in the 47th minute in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. Junior goalkeeper Scott Bergen (Schenectady/Mohonasen) made 13 saves to post the shutout. Many of his stops were from close range. Mahaffey's goal, assisted by junior midfielder Rob Esposito (Dover Plains/Dover), was the first of the season allowed by the Cardinals (3-1-1, 0-1-0), ranked No. 13 by the National College Soccer Coaches of America and No. 10 by the upstart D3Kicks.com. A pass from the left wing by Esposito was headed into the air by a Plattsburgh defender and side-volleyed by Mahaffey for his first goal of the season. Tamtakiridis did not start the game but started the second half and he paid immediate dividends with his first collegiate goal less than two minutes after intermission. He tipped in a short shot from the top of the box following a free kick sent into the box and a scramble for the loose ball. While outshot 25-15, the Blue Devils (3-3-0, 1-0-0) were able to cover up on the many chances and when they did not Bergen was there to make several key stops. It was his second shutout as a Blue Devil. Fredonia State is back in SUNYAC action 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Potsdam on the Brigham Road Field.
