Devils open SUNYAC season with 3-0 home win

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its SUNYAC season Saturday with a 3-0 home win over SUNYIT.

Jordan Berg (Jamestown/Jamestown) had a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville) made six saves for the Blue Devils (5-1-1, 1-0-0).

Scott Gentner (Buffalo/St. Joe's) opened the scoring at 6:11, from Brandon Derkacz (Hamburg/Hamburg). The Blue Devils took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Berg made it 2-0 at 68:19. Derkacz picked up his second assist of the game. Michael Battisti (Brockport/Brockport) also earned an assist.

Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) closed the scoring at 79:17 with Berg assisting.

Borchard played 82 minutes before giving way to Yoshikazu Arai (Yokohama, Japan) to complete the shutout.

Gentner, a freshman, was credited with the game-winning goal. It was his first point as a collegian.

In addition, the goals by Berg -- a junior transfer -- and Mahaffey, also a junior, were their first goals of the season, respectively.

The Blue Devils had a 18-15 advantage in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks over the Wildcats (1-4-0).

Fredonia State, ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division III Northeast Region poll, is back in action at noon Sunday (Sept. 18) vs. New Paltz at Steele Hall Field.
