Wilmington rallies to down Devils

WHEATON, Ill. -- A pair of late second-half goals sent Wilmington College over Fredonia State, 3-2, in the men's consolation game of the Bob Baptista Invitational.

Down early in the first half, the Blue Devils (0-2) bounced back to tie the game at 9:07. Junior midfielder Rob Esposito (Dover Plains/Dover) scored his first goal with a low, hard shot into the bottom right corner from 30 yards away.

Fredonia State took its first lead of the season when junior Lee Wilson (Fairport/Fairport) scored at 44:40. Junior defender Matt Smith (Lockport/Lockport) earned an assist for his pass into the box from out of the corner.

The score remained 2-1, Fredonia State, until 3:16 remained. A penalty kick by Wilmington's Alex Van de Sluijs tied the score before Michael Kiszkiel, with 2:29 to go, made a nifty move outside the box to beat Fredonia State junior goaltender Steve Bergen (Schenectady/Mohonasen) for the game-winning tally.

Bergen finished with three saves while Esposito was credited with three shots, two of them on net. Wilmington goalkeeper Aaron Slusher was called on to make four saves.

Fredonia State are back in action Tues., Sept. 5, vs. Medaille in the Blue Devil home opener. Game time is 4 p.m. at the Brigham Road Field.
