Four different players had goals for the Blue Devils (7-1-1), currently No. 5 in the NCAA Division III Northeast rankings. Junior forward Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) led the offense with one goal and one assist, and senior midfielder Vincenzo Alfieri (Rochester/McQuaid) had two assists. At the other end, senior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made six saves to post his sixth shutout of the season and the 22nd over four seasons as a Blue Devil. Sophomore defender Matt Smith (Lockport/Lockport) gave Fredonia State a 1-0 lead with a header off a corner kick by Alfieri in the 35th minute. It was Smith's first goal as a Blue Devil. Mahaffey added the first insurance goal in the 78th minute off a crossing pass by Alfieri. One minute later, freshman midfielder Chris Huber (Horseheads/Horseheads) made it 3-0 with his first collegiate goal on a rebound off of a shot by Mahaffey. Freshman midfielder Zach Wood (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) closed the scoring with his first collegiate goal in the 87th minute. Junior forward Steve Lesmes (Fredonia/Fredonia) was credited with an assist following a goal-producing goal-mouth scramble. The Blue Devils had a 19-10 advantage in shots. Junior goalkeeper Brian Middleton (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) made three saves for the Saxons (3-3). Fredonia State is back in action 3 p.m. Saturday vs. John Carroll at Steele Hall Field.
