Devils down Capital in overtime, 1-0

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Trevor Ianni (Rochester/Gates Chili) scored in overtime and Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) had the shutout as Fredonia State defeated Capital University, 1-0, in the consolation game of the Fred Myers Invitational.

Ianni volleyed in the game-winning goal 4:51 into overtime after Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) played a cross from Kevin Swain (Churchville/Churchville-Chili). Mahaffey hit the cross bar with his header before Ianni converted.

Meanwhile, Borchard made six saves on the 10 shots attempted by Capital. The Blue Devils (1-1) countered with 20 shots, three each by Ianni, Mahaffey and Vincenzo Alfieri (Rochester/McQuaid).

Jordan Berg (Jamestown/Jamestown) joined Mahaffey and Alfieri on the all-tournament team. Alfieri had his team's lone goal in a 3-1 loss Friday to Ohio Wesleyan.

"We really deserved to win," Fredonia State head coach P.J. Gondek said. "We had a much better effort today, played with composure and made changes defensively."

The Blue Devils are back in action Tuesday when they play their home opener at 4 p.m. against Keuka.
