The shutout for the Blue Devils (9-1-1, 3-0-0 SUNYAC) was their school-record eighth straight. The loss dropped Cortland to 5-4-0, 0-3-0 SUNYAC. Fredonia State was awarded the penalty kick when one of their players was tripped on the left side of the box. Alfieri then deposited a shot into the upper right as Cortland senior goalie Sean Trask (Alplaus/Niskayuna) guessed the other side. After the goal, quality chances were scarce in the physical game. Cortland sophomore Steve DePersis (Johnson City) took a pass from sophomore Eric Reinhardt (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) deep on the right side of the box in the 10th minute. DePersis's low shot was blocked in the midsection by Fredonia State senior goalie Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South), who charged off his line to make the play. In the 41st minute, Trask made a similar play at the left post to deny Blue Devil senior Michael Battisti (Brockport). Early in the second half, Fredonia generated two good opportunities but couldn't extend the lead. In the 47th minute, Trask stopped a shot by freshman Scott Gentner (Buffalo/St. Joe's) at the right post, and Cortland sophomore Charlie Dickinson (Endicott/Union-Endicott) headed away junior Matt Mahaffey's (Lakeview/Frontier) header off a corner kick right at the goal line inside the right post. Cortland's best chance in the second half came in the 70th minute. Freshman Peter Degere (West Islip) dribbled past three defenders down the right side and served a ball into the box. DePersis got off a solid header aimed for the upper right corner, but Borchard made the save. Trask finished the game with six saves, while Borchard stopped five shots.
