Devils remain unbeaten in SUNYAC competition

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia State improved to 4-0 in SUNYAC conference play and 7-4-1 overall with a 1-0 victory Saturday over SUNY New Paltz at Alumni Field.

The Blue Devils scored early, just 1:28 into the game, on a shot by freshman Steve Tamtakiridis (Toronto, Ont./East York Collegiate) on a nifty pass from teammate Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier). It was the fifth goal of the season for Tamtakiridis.

New Paltz had a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick at 41:13, but the shot from sophomore Robert Mendes (Mineola) just missed the upper right corner and deflected off the cross bar. The Hawks (2-8-1, 0-5-1 SUNYAC) couldn’t capitalize in the second half as Fredonia State junior keeper Scott Bergen (Schenectady.Mohonasen) stopped 14 shots to preserve the shutout, his fourth of the season.

Senior keeper Jeffrey Dudley (Poughkeepsie) made nine saves for New Paltz.

The win completed a stretch of five straight road games (3-1-1) for the Blue Devils. They return home Friday vs. Oswego, and next Saturday vs. Cortland.
