Medaille blanks Fredonia State

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's early season troubles continued with a 1-0 loss Tuesday to Medaille College.

Josh Meier converted a cross from Gary Boughton inside the six-year line to account for the only goal at 48:46. Otherwise, Fredonia State goalkeeper Scott Bergen (Schenectady/Mohonasen) made eight saves.

The goal was initially waved off but the officials would meet and overturn the call. The Mavs would nearly score about 10 seconds later but they pushed the ball wide of the goal.

By winning, Medaille -- ranked No. 22 in the D3Kicks.com poll -- avenged its only loss of the 2006 regular season.

The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first 45 minutes with the host Mavs holding a slight edge in shots, 7-4. The Mavs outshot Fredonia State 15-2 in the second half and they had a couple of breakaway chances get away from them.

The Blue Devils (0-3-0) managed six shots in the game, three by senior Rob Esposito (Dover Plains/Dover), but only one shot ended up on net. Medaille goalkeeper J.J. Bilinski made the lone stop.

Action shifts to the inaugural home game at University Stadium at 7:30 p.m. when the Blue Devils take on Penn State Behrend. Opening ceremonies are expected to begin at 7:15 p.m.
