Two goals by Lesmes carry Devils over Keuka, 3-1

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Steve Lesmes (Fredonia/Fredonia) scored two goals, including the game-winner, as Fredonia State defeated Keuka, 3-1, in men's non-conference soccer.

Lesmes scored on a pretty bicycle kick in the 56th minute to push the Blue Devils (2-1) out to a 2-1 lead. He added an insurance goal in the 90th minute.

Brandon Derkacz (Hamburg/Hamburg) earned an assist on the first goal by Lesmes, who converted on a corner kick. Bryon Thoin (Buffalo/St. Joseph's) assisted on the insurance goal.

Keuka grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Brandon Scott (Filmore/Filmore) beat Blue Devil goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) following a free kick. Mike Eckert (Elmira/Elmira Free Academy) was credited with an assist.

The Blue Devils tied the score, 1-1, as Vincenzo Alfieri (Rochester/McQuaid) scored on a penalty kick at the 35:30 mark after a Keuka player was called for hand ball.

Borchard finished with one save while Keuka goalkeeper Greg Lewin (Rochester/Gates Chili) stopped five shots. The Blue Devils had a 15-5 advantage in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Blue Devils return to action Friday, Sept. 9, vs. Hiram College at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Fredonia State Days Inn Classic.
