Devils, Hiram win Classic openers

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Junior forward Trevor Ianni (Rochester/Gates Chili) scored off his own rebound to lift Fredonia State over Mount Union, 1-0, in the opening game Friday of the Blue Devil Days Inn Classic.

The Hiram Terriers topped Penn State Behrend, 2-0, in the nightcap and set up what now becomes a championship game meeting with the Blue Devils (2-2-0) 3 p.m. Saturday on the Brigham Road Field.

Mount Union and Penn State Behrend will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Ianni's goal, his second of the season, came at 32:47 and was the culmination of a play which began on the Fredonia State side of midfield. A long lead pass found Ianni streaking through the Mount Union defense. Raider senior goalkeeper Eric Sebor (Solon, Ohio) made the initial stop, only to have Ianni control the short rebound, turn, and get off a quick shot.

Fredonia State junior goalkeeper Scott Bergen (Schenectady/Mohonasen) made the goal stand by making three saves. Sebor made 12 saves for the Raiders (1-2-0).

In the nightcap, the Terriers (3-1-0) scored early and late in its 2-0 win over Penn State Behrend. Sophomore midfielder Conor Falcon (East Liverpool, Ohio) made it 1-0 at 1:45. Freshman defender Phillip Major (Walnut Creek, Ohio) added an insurance tally at 68:10.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Rausch (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) made three saves to earn the shutout. For the Lions (0-1-0), freshman Dustin Walker (Kiski, Pa.) had five saves.
