Freshman midfielder David Krems (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) got around a Fredonia State defender by slipping the ball through his opponent's legs. Krems then put a low, short shot into the net in the 72nd minute of the title game. The Blue Devils (2-3-0) mounted a furious bid to tie the score. In a span of two minutes, Hiram sophomore goalkeeper Nate Rausch (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) pushed aside a short header after a brilliant cross deep into the box, stopped a penalty shot, and saw a hard blast by Fredonia State senior forward Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier) bang off the left post. Rausch finished with nine saves while Fredonia State junior Scott Bergen (Schnectady/Mohonasen) had seven. Hiram freshman defender Vince DeBartalemeo (Copley/St. Vincent-St. Mary) was chosen Classic MVP while Krems, sophomore Mike Maiorano (Warren, Ohio/Howland), and sophomore Kelsey Resnick (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) made the all-tournament team. The Fredonia State all-tournament picks were Bergen, sophomore midfielder Jeff Moretti (Rochester/Pittsford-Mendon), and junior midfielder Rob Esposito (Dover Plains/Dover). In the other Classic game Saturday, Mount Union nailed down third place with a 3-1 victory over Penn State Behrend. Axel Sandoval (Hondouras) had two goals for Mount Union while all-tournament member Trevor Beach (Brecksville, Ohio) had one goal and one assist. The Behrend goal was scored by Joe Romanelli (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny). The other all-tourney picks were Bryon Eaton (Bay Village, Ohio) of Mount Union, and the Behrend duo of Seam Ruhlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) and Chris Ream (Manheim, Pa./Ranheim).
