Devils, Rowan tie; Mt. Union wins title

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State and Rowan University played to a scoreless tie Saturday in the final game of the Fredonia State Days Inn Classic.

The teams played 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes without either team netting a goal.

The Blue Devils (3-1-1) needed to win by at least two goals to claim the Classic title. They finished as the runners-up while the title went to Mount Union College, which defeated Hiram College, 3-2, in overtime earlier in the day.

Mount Union's David Hradek (Wooster, Ohio) was named tournament MVP. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Dan Sears (Bay Village, Ohio), John Moenk (Brecksville, Ohio), and Bill Kotinsley (Bay Village, Ohio).

Fredonia State goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made the all-tourney team along with Blue Devils Bryon Thoin (Buffalo/St. Joseph's) and Matt Smith (Lockport/Lockport).

Borchard preserved the tie with a diving, one-handed save with seconds left in regulation time. He finished with nine saves.

Rowan, ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division III, had a 17-10 advantage in shots.

Rowan used two goalkeepers. The starter, Brian Lloyd (Swainton), made three saves in the first half. His replacement, Anthony Clemente (Kendall Park), had one save.

Nik Golden (Crosswicks, N.J.) and Ryen Garrison (Elmer, N.J.) were Rowan's all-tournament picks. Hiram was represented by Trevor Gibbs (Georgetown, Grand Cayman) and Chad Williams (Kingston, Jamaica).
