'Hot Foot' Lesmes leads Devils; Mt. Union upsets No. 12 Rowan

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Steve Lesmes (Fredonia/Fredonia) scored the only goal as Fredonia State defeated Hiram 1-0 on the opening day of the Days Inn Classic at Steele Hall Field. The goal came at the 24:19 mark of the second half.

Trevor Ianni (Rochester/Gates Chili) made a pass to leave Lesmes one-on-one with Hiram goalkeeper Nate Roush (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio). Lesmes dribbled past him and put in the decisive goal.

The Blue Devil's strong defense was aided by a red card handed out to Hiram in the second half, giving the Blue Devils a man advantage and helping them contain the Hiram offense. Hiram was limited to three shots on goal. Fredonia was able to get off fourteen shots.

In the nightcap of the Classic, Mt. Union (1-2-0) made a first half goal stand up, upsetting Rowan (2-2-0), the No. 12 ranked team in Division III. Trevor Beach (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville) scored an unassisted goal at the 38:25 mark in a physical game that featured three yellow cards charged to Mt. Union and one red card assessed to Rowan. Mt. Union was credited with eight shots on goal to Rowan's three.

Fredonia State will take on Rowan at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Hiram and Mount Union will play at 11 a.m.
