Devils, Eagles tie 0-0

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Fredonia State won the shootout Friday to earn a tiebreaker over Brockport if it is eventually needed for playoff seeding purposes.

Freshman forward Andrew Sharman (Kenmore/St. Joe's Collegiate) scored what turned out to be the decisive shootout tally after the teams played to a 0-0 draw through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes.

The game is officially recorded as a scoreless tie in the tight SUNYAC standings. Buffalo State and New Paltz are currently tied for first place. Fredonia State and Brockport are one point back.

The Blue Devils (7-4-3, 4-1-2) had two chances to win the game in the second overtime. Brockport goalkeeper Shaun Ernewein stopped a shot by freshman midfielder Michael Battisti (Brockport/Brockport) from 10 yards out with 1:20 remaining. About 30 seconds later, senior midfielder Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquinas) overshot the net with Ernewin out of his post.

The Golden Eagles (9-2-2, 4-1-2) had a 10-6 shot advantage in the first half, while Fredonia State held a 6-5 advantage after halftime.

Ernewin had 10 saves while Blue Devil senior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made six saves to complete his eighth shutout of the season.

The Blue Devils are back in action 1 p.m. Saturday at Geneseo. Their final conference game is Oct. 20 at Buffalo State.
