Devils down Bengals on Cupello header

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) scored in the 68th minute to push Fredonia State past Buffalo State, 1-0, in SUNYAC men's soccer.

Cupello headed a corner kick by junior Michael Mace (Elmira/Notre Dame) while junior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made four saves for his eighth shutout of the season. He entered the game fifth in the nation (NCAA Division III) with a 0.278 goals-against average.

Fredonia State outshot Buffalo State, 20-14, and had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Depending on the outcome of other games played Tuesday, the Blue Devils (8-5-3, 5-2-2) -- already guaranteed one of six SUNYAC playoff berths -- may have earned a first-round home game by winning Tuesday. The conference playoffs begin Nov. 2.

In the meantime, the Blue Devils will close out their regular season with non-conference games, starting noon Saturday at home against Rochester Institute of Technology.
