Devils overtake Hobart, 3-1

FREDONIA, N.Y. – A goal by freshman Trevor Ianni (Rochester/Gates Chili) broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the Blue Devils to a 3-1 victory over the Hobart Statesmen at Steele Hall Field.

Ianni scored with 18:01 left in the second half after Hobart goalkeeper Dan Adler (Upper Brookville) came down with a high save and dropped the ball when jarred by Blue Devil sophomore Brian Annechino (Rochester/Penfield).

Sophomore Kevin Swain (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) scored an insurance goal with 4:41 left. Freshman Vincenzo Alfieri (Rochester/McQuaid) assisted on the goal.

Senior Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquanis) staked Fredonia State to a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first half. Cupello's header at 9:29 was assisted by junior Victor Ianni (Rochester/Gates Chili).

The Statesmen (5-12) evened the score on a goal by senior Juan Vargas (El Paso, Texas) in the eighth minute of the second half.

Fredonia State junior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made five saves.

Adler made seven saves for Hobart. His team was outshot, 20-19. Fredonia State led in corner kicks, 6-4.

The Blue Devils (10-5-3) open SUNYAC Tournament action 1 p.m. Tuesday at home against Brockport.
